Materials Tester (m/f)

What do you learn during the apprenticeship for a materials tester?

Materials testers plan, control and monitor heat treatment processes such as hardening or tempering of metallic workpieces. They are trained to examine workpieces independently and to change their properties using thermochemical processes. Materials testers also acquire basic skills in metal processing. This includes detailed knowledge of the preceding production and processing steps. A fundamental knowledge of material properties enables them to analyze the causes of material defects and optimize component properties. Before, during and after heat treatment, they take components or samples, examine their properties, document the test results and release the production batch for delivery.

This 3.5-year apprenticeship can easily be completed with an advanced technical college certificate. Also dropouts in the scientific or technical field often take advantage of this training, as the focus here is on practical relevance in addition to theoretical background knowledge. Most of the training takes place within the company, some training courses are external. The vocational school is attended two days a week in the first year of training and on one day in each of the following years. The remaining training time takes place in the company to learn the practical procedures.
